For this study, the online milieu of radical right-wing and extreme right-wing actors was investigated with particular regard to its linking strategies to alternative platforms. The aim of the analysis was to make the cosmos of online platforms used by extreme right-wing and radical right-wing actors accessible.
"Detours and Diversions" presents the key findings of the project "Countering Radicalisation in Right-Wing Extremist Online Subcultures", which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Justice (BMJ). This analysis explores the interplay between the Australian far right and far left online across Twitter, Facebook and Gab. Crucially, it provides an evidence base which demonstrates that the far-right is much more prone to violent rhetoric than the far-left, pushing back against conceptions which paint them as equivalent threats.

For this research, ISD’s digital analysis unit have been monitoring a network of 208 channels distributing white supremacist content on the encrypted messaging platform Telegram. In an analysis of over a million posts, this briefing unpacks how the platform is being used to glorify terrorism, call for violence, spread extremist ideological material and demonise minority groups.
