Thousands of hours of recently released Jan 6 security footage being used to spread false narratives

US House Speaker Mike Johnson recently released thousands of hours of security footage of the Jan 6 Capitol insurrection. ISD’s Head of Threat Analysis and Prevention, Katherine Keneally, spoke to the New York Times about the speaker’s decision and how the footage, which is being shared in waves, is already being used to spread false narratives.

“The amplification of these narratives by high-profile figures, including public officials… gives a sense of validity to these narratives,” she said, emphasising the danger behind these narratives gaining traction and their potential to influence threats and offline actions. “With this increase in perceived validity, we also have a potential for an increase in threats, especially to public officials.”
