ISD’s Tim Squirrell speaks with The New York Times about how the UK defines terrorism

Tim Squirrell, ISD’s Director of Communications, spoke with the New York Times about how the failures of the UK Prevent program in light of the Southport Stabbings. Tim explained that the program’s current approach requires individuals to fit into a specific ideology to elicit response protocols—an approach that doesn’t always work.  

“People don’t need a coherent worldview to embark on mass violence,” Tim said. “We cannot prevent every single case but we need to be looking at mass violence as a problem in itself rather than as a subset of terrorism.”
