Anti-LGBTQ+ posts surge in relation to offline events

ISD’s latest Dispatch, which explores how spikes in online extremist activity are tied to offline events, was featured in Bloomberg.

Our research identified over 97,000 anti-LGBTQ+ posts between August 2024 and January 2025. This content consistently surged during times of major political events and disproportionately targeted trans individuals. These surges were linked to events such as false accusations that Olympic boxer Imane Khelif is transgender, the National Transgender Day of Remembrance, and the executive order on “gender ideology” issued shortly after President Trump’s inauguration.
